The 43-year-old Frenchman made his final radio contact at midday on Thursday.

Investigators were today still trying to piece together what happened.

French and Channel Island coastguards launched the full-scale rescue operation on Friday evening following reports of a yacht adrift six miles south of Corbière.

The skipper of a Dutch yacht raised the alarm on arrival in St Helier that evening after seeing the apparently unmanned sailing vessel in the afternoon.
