Telecom sale must not be rushed, say Scrutiny

Panel chairman Deputy Geoff Southern says that anything less than a full review of the plan would be skimping on a major debate.

He says that as well as the amount of money that could be raised, the States should also consider their social responsibility to Islanders as phone users, and as the ultimate owners of Jersey Telecom.

Deputy Southern said: ‘This is a major decision over a resource which is vital to the economy of the Island.

I am concerned over the haste with which the Treasury and Resources Minister wishes to act.

This decision must not be rushed.

Consultation over a holiday is unsatisfactory and lodging by October is unrealistic.

‘The Minister is too concerned with maximising his profit.

His sole aim appears to be the bottom line.’
