Sharp rise in street violence

A high number of assaults in April and May contributed to a 25% rise in street violence in the first six months of this year as compared to the same period in 2005.

However, the growing number of arrests may be partially due to more police officers being on the streets late at night in trouble spots such as the Weighbridge, the waterfront and Minden Place.

Meanwhile, figures released by the States police also show a 20% jump in offences such as malicious damage and arson.

Offences against the person – a category including all violence and abuse – were up by 21% in comparison to last year and 9% above the three year average.
