Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard is to propose to the States that the balance of proof should be moved on to people accused of carrying knives.
States Police Chief Graham Power said that, with 65 knife crimes per year, Jersey does not have a problem on the same scale as some areas of the UK, but that the current law is ineffective.
Mr Power said: ‘The amendment is designed to address routine knife-carrying by people who are prone to violence.
‘The problem in Jersey is not the same as in the UK, but the statistics of roughly one knife-related crime every five days say what they say.
‘Our intelligence leads us to believe some dangerous people are routinely in the habit of carrying knives.’
