Politicians take a trip round the bays

Transport Minister Guy de Faye and the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, have heard a lot about drivers who struggle to find free unloading bays, particularly next to the Central Market in Halkett Place.

Mr Crowcroft is rallying for French Lane, which runs from Halkett Place and past McDonald’s, to be pedestrianised between 11 am and the evening but market traders are fiercely opposed to the idea.

Deputy de Faye supports them and says it would ‘defy common sense’ to close the cobbled road because it offers an ‘escape route’ for drivers when unloading bays are full.

If it were closed they would have to go up to Mulcaster Street and either through the Tunnel or up to Charing Cross and through town to get back to Halkett Place.
