Opened on Monday lunchtime, the event is taking place on a grassy area above the car park and is aimed at complementing the Battle of Flowers programme.

It is the first food festival to be organised by businessmen Martyn Farley, of Waterfront Events, James Shepherd, of Serco (Jersey) Ltd, who manage WEB’s facilities including the Aquasplash pool, and Marcus Troy, of the hotel group Trojan Leisure.

Jason Maindonald, of Serco, is technical co-ordinator of the festival, which came from an idea by the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft.

Running daily until Sunday from noon to 9 pm, the event features traditional dishes from England, Thailand, Portugal and Madeira, the United States, Poland and Italy, as well as Peking and Szechuan cuisine from China.

At different times during the week there will be varied types of musical entertainment – sounds from Ireland, Spain and France, Latin, jazz and calypso styles and busking sessions.

Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher, who has co-ordinated the music, said that local entertainers were set to give the festival ‘a real party feel’.
