Islands work out a deal on mobile phones

The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority announced in June that it had agreed to put in place a direction to enable Jersey consumers to keep their mobile phone number if they decided that they could get a better deal from an alternative provider.

Now Guernsey consumers will be plugging in to Jersey’s ‘mobile number portability’ technology, thanks to co-operation between the JCRA and Guernsey’s Office of Utility Regulation.

Bill Brown, executive director of the JCRA, said that since each Island had the same three licensed operators – Jersey Telecom, Cable & Wireless and Airtel/Jersey Telenet – there was no real obstacle to a joint Channel Islands solution.

‘I think this is primarily an example of how competition can reduce costs,’ said Mr Brown.

‘There is co-operation at the level of the regulators but also between the operators themselves.
