The La Moye Golf Club duo won the Jersey Western GC Open, at La Moye on Sunday, with the excellent net score of 63 1/2 off 8 1/2 handicap – beating the fully subscribed field of 98 pairings by four shots.
They claimed the W N Rumball Cup following an excellent level par gross score of 72.
Jonny Mynes said: ‘We were surprised, especially as I only stepped in as a late replacement for my brother as he went on holiday.
‘We were two over par after four holes but after that it really went well with 12 pars and two birdies.
It’s amazing really because dad’s best was previously 73 and mine 76.
‘To come together and shoot 72 in the hardest format in golf was unbelievable.
We knew we were on to something special midway through.
We didn’t talk a lot as we both concentrated hard.
‘We managed to churn it out and we’re very pleased to have won.’ Runners-up were juniors Jack Critchley (La Moye) and Olivia Higgins (Royal Jersey), who also scored a level par 72.
La Moye and Island players Andy Clarke and Richard Ramskill won the IA MacMillan Cup for the lowest scratch score – an incredible 66 following a round that included two eagles and four birdies! The score was the lowest in the tournament’s history.
Clarke said: ‘Richard and I have both been working hard on our games lately with the inter-insular coming up and when we play together we usually gel well.
‘Just last week I managed to beat Richard in a Club championship quarter final in a match with a flurry of birdies.
‘Starting at the tenth I missed a four-foot putt on the 18th for 29 shots which would have been seven under par so my form is good.
‘Our 66 on Sunday was unbelievable.
‘We missed a few other putts as well which means we could have done even better.
‘Foursomes is difficult to play because your partner has to play well too and looking back now two bogeys on the back nine really disappointed us.’ Second in the Scratch section following a one-under-par 71 were fellow Island golfers Gavin O’Neill and Christy McLaughlin, of Royal Jersey.
The Foursomes was sponsored by Collins Stewart and Corbière Phare Apartments.
