Executive director Howard Pridding said that visiting yachts would simply go somewhere else and that ordinary local boat owners might have to give up their hobby.
Mr Pridding, whose organisation successfully lobbied the UK government to reconsider taxing British boat owners earlier this year, said that Jersey should be encouraging yachtsmen to the Island and not pushing them elsewhere with high prices.
When he met ministers on Thursday, he told them that boating was not just the hobby of the rich and that many working people who enjoyed the pastime may have to stop if a fuel price rise of 70% was introduced.
‘I have been asking your politicians to think about the impact that imposing duty will have on the industry as a whole,’ he told the JEP.
