Deputy Pitman says that, with a minimal workforce and a serious lack of money, some of the 12 youth clubs in the Island are operating with just one trained youth worker to up to 50 young people.
Deputy Pitman, whose husband is a youth worker, said that the Education Department do not care enough to save an important local resource.
Although over 80 per cent of 13- to 19-year-olds in Jersey went to a youth club every week in 2002, Deputy Pitman said, the Youth Service is forced to exist on a budget of just over one million pounds a year.
And despite being criticised in the States on more than one occasion for her repeated questioning of Education Minister Mike Vibert, Chief Minister Frank Walker and Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard about funding, Deputy Pitman said that she will continue to fight to increase their budget.
