Airport is spared worst of delays

British Airways cancelled all domestic flights out of Gatwick today, except for services to and from Jersey.

The security alert has been downgraded from critical to severe and Jersey Airport is now allowing passengers to take hand baggage onto planes.

However, the bags being allowed on board are roughly half the normal size – similar to a laptop case or briefcase.

Mobile telephones and keys are allowed, but liquids, creams and pastes are still banned.

Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports were still enforcing the stricter rules, allowing only clear plastic bags with travel documents in them.

One group of Jersey travellers who managed to get out and who were due to leave Heathrow today were the nine Overseas Aid volunteers on their way to the Kenyan town of Kisumu.

They had been due to leave on Friday but finally got away from Jersey yesterday.
