Firefighters were called to the Egypt area this morning, close to the area of the north coast that has been blackened by one of the most devastating furze fires in a generation.
They feared that the blaze had flared up again, but discovered the smoke was actually coming from a bonfire in someone’s garden.
Jason Masterman, a station manager at the fire station, said: ‘We would like to remind people that there are proper dumping areas for garden waste and other rubbish at La Collette and Bellozanne.
We urge people to use these facilities.’ He added that it was still only August and the ground was still very dry so such fires could also spark much larger blazes.
