For the first time, Island residents may soon benefit from the type of cut-throat competition that has been prevalent in the UK mobile and internet broadband market for years.
Jersey Airtel – part of the Indian Bharti Telecom group chaired by Sunil Bharti Mittal – and Cable & Wireless both say that they will soon launch a new range of services and products.
It is anticipated that the two companies will be competing strongly with Jersey Telecom for business in the run-up to the festive period.
It is expected that free phones, cheap calls and new internet access services will be available at very competitive rates.
However, Jersey Telecom director Philip Ainsworth said that they were ready to compete very strongly to maintain market share.
Yesterday Jersey Airtel announced that it is close to finalising the package of products it will offer to tens of thousands of mobile-using Islanders through its Airtel service.
Meanwhile, it is expected that Cable & Wireless will be releasing some details of its proposed operations within days.
