But as well as providing more welfare for low-income Islanders, the Income Support (Jersey) Law could deprive higher-earning residents of benefits.
Social Security Minister Paul Routier argues that this is necessary to ensure that the poor are protected when the Goods and Services Tax comes into force.
In a report issued to States Members today, Senator Routier says: ‘If we are to be successful in targeting resources to maximise the impact upon poverty levels in the Island, some houses with higher incomes will not receive the same level of financial support in comparison with what they already receive.’
