Spence goes it alone

Organised by Vélosport Jersey, the 30-mile road race works on the theory that two riders, taking it in turn to pull each other along the course, should comfortably beat a rider working on his own.

Spence, however, who leaves the Island at the end of the week to get married, disproved the theory by beating the second-placed pairing of Dave Mayman and Mike Harris who finished over two minutes behind him.

Final battle Jim Garrett and Marc Le Sueur finished third in 1.11.35.

Conditions were just about perfect for the two-up time trial starting from Red Houses, round the Corbière Loop, along the Five Mile Road, up Mont des Corvées and onto the Bal Tab circuit.

From there the course wound across the top of the Island, taking in Les Platons, followed by a downhill dash through St Martin’s and Gorey with a final battle into a headwind to the La Mare finish.

Junior Robert Coutanche underlined his impressive form in his first season riding with veteran Simon Fenton as they finished sixth in a time of 1.17.34, while Jim Davis was first lady home paired with Mike Keighrey.

First ladies’ pairing were Helen Goulding and Sarah Smith.
