The Prison governor has refused to identify the prisoner – other than to say that he was a man – or release his age, or say whether he was on remand or had been sentenced.

Governor Steve Guy-Gibbens announced this morning that a prisoner was found hanging in his cell at lunchtime on Saturday.

The staff who found him immediately cut him down and tried to resuscitate him, and despite an ambulance attending he was pronounced dead at the General Hospital a short time later.

Mr Guy-Gibbens has ordered an internal inquiry and the deputy Viscount, Peter de Gruchy, has begun the formal inquiry before the opening of an inquest.

Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard and Board of Visitors chairman Jurat John Tibbo went to HMP La Moye to talk to the governor and staff after they were told about the suicide.
