Warning on dangers of extradition

Steven Platt says Islanders working in the finance industry needed to take the lesson of the ‘Natwest Three’ seriously.

The three London-based bankers were extradited to the US to face fraud charges relating to the Enron collapse earlier this year.

Although the case against them had not been proven and no judgment had been taken, under US-UK extradition rules the UK Home Secretary was powerless to protect the three.

Jersey’s extradition position is essentially the same as the UK’s in that US authorities only need to outline an alleged offence and provide evidence that would justify an arrest warrant in the UK to extradict.

Mr Platt, the managing partner of Jersey legal firm and training company BakerPlatt, is bringing American lawyer Jack Blum to Jersey to speak to finance professionals about the extradition risk.
