Mr Harvey (35), who was reported missing after diving in Fermain Bay on Saturday morning, was thought to have perished but was plucked from the sea by a passing yacht, close to the area where he had dived, after 58 hours in the water.

Steve and Anne-Marie Westwood were aboard their boat watching a pod of dolphins off Fermain shortly before 7 pm on Monday when they noticed something floating which turned out to be Mr Harvey, who was motionless in the water.

‘He was in his wetsuit, which had a tear across the hood,’ said Mr Westwood.

‘He hadn’t got his tank or regs and no weight belt, so clearly he’d managed to dump them and he was just floating on his back.’ Guernsey Harbourmaster Captain Peter Gill, who co-ordinated the search for Mr Harvey, said that he had never heard of anyone pulled from the sea alive after 58 hours.
