Artists court fame at unusual venue

An exhibition which opens to the public on Monday 11 September features the work of young Jersey artists and designers who have graduated this year from UK universities and colleges.

They are making use of the space at the back of the Town Hall where speeders, drunk drivers and other offenders formerly faced justice.

The exhibition is being supported by the Jersey Arts Trust and has had valuable assistance from the Parish of St Helier.

The 12 artists and designers whose work will be displayed have just returned from further education in Falmouth, Maidstone, Bournemouth, Manchester, Bristol and Huddersfield.

The 12 call themselves the Upwards Group and the exhibition is entitled The Lock Down – a clear reference to the non-traditional art space in which they have chosen to display their work.

The exhibition co-ordinator, Anna Louise Shipley, said: ‘Not only is the old Magistrate’s Court the perfect venue, it is also a fascinating relic of social history in its own right.

It is more than a courtroom – behind the scenes there are holding cells, waiting rooms and the Magistrate’s private chamber.

We are hoping that people will come to see the environment we have chosen, as well of course as the works which we are showing.’
