The ban on smoking in ‘all enclosed work spaces’ has not yet been rubber-stamped by the States, but when it was debated in May only two politicians opposed it.
But until now it had been thought that people would be allowed to smoke in al fresco areas outside pubs, restaurants and cafés.
However, the St Helier roads committee, who grant al fresco licences in the parish, could make it a condition of a licence that there is to be no smoking.
