He told the Social Affairs scrutiny panel that abolishing the role of the Centeniers could seriously damage the honorary police system and would come at a ‘considerable cost’.
The invaluable local knowledge that many Centeniers had about their communities, as well as their willingness to be available night and day, were invaluable to Jersey’s well functioning court system.
But Mr Le Marquand, who has been the Island’s Magistrate since 1999, added that while many Centeniers work-ed diligently to fulfil their role in the courts, some were simply not up to scratch.
