The arrival of HIV, the virus that can lead to Aids, within their community is likely to shock teenagers and while health officials are deeply concerned about the development, they hope that the news may also shake youngsters out of their apparent complacency about safe sex.

The incidence of sexually transmitted disease among young people is the highest it has ever been, with rates of chlamydia spiralling out of control and syphilis also prevalent among the young population.

The full extent of the problem will be revealed tomorrow when the Medical Officer of Health, Dr Rosemary Geller, publishes her annual report.
