Lee Dewhurst absconded in July from Prescoed open prison, where he was serving life for the murder of a gay singer in 1992.
He had battered Stephen O’Hara to death with a monkey wrench.
When he went missing, a nationwide manhunt was launched, and Dewhurst was described by police as dangerous and as someone who should not be approached by the public.
He was apparently spotted at several gay events in the north of England, and that was where police were concentrating their search.
