Builder Sam Cannon (45) was raised in care in Stockport and has never been able to find out who his father was.
He thought that lifelong question had been answered when a woman, who was working for private investigator David Watkins, told him his father had died and left him ‘a substantial amount of money’.
But he was left distressed when he discovered she had lied to get his passport details.
He was involved in a legal battle with an ex-business partner and believes the information was used to obtain his 25-year-old criminal record, which was brought up in court.
