He has rejected Social Security Minister Paul Routier’s proposal to dip into the Social Security Health Insurance Fund to cover the 3% sales tax on GP visits and prescriptions.
Apart from the effect on the fund itself, Senator Syvret said the proposal would not deal with the price of non-prescription medicines, opticians, dentists or charges for residential or social care.
‘It is manifestly and really quite obviously a wholly unworkable solution,’ said Senator Syvret.
