Heads against school condoms

The idea has been floated by Health Minister Stuart Syvret in response to the growing problem of sexual transmitted infections among under-16s.

But while secondary heads support more debate on the issue, they are not in favour of making condoms available at school to children below the legal age of consent.

John Thorp, the head at Les Quennevais, said: ‘Instinctively I probably would not be in favour of it.

Most of our children are under the age of 16 and if we are installing condom machines we are implicitly encouraging law breaking.

There is a lot to be said for a pragmatic approach but this does not seem right at this time.’ Mr Thorp believes the standard of PSE (physical and social education) in his school is very high, and that the school does all it can to educate young people about responsibility and the risks of unprotected sex.

‘I am certainly happy with the sex education here but it’s very hard to defeat peer pressures.

I think there’s more openness about sex matters and from society at large there’s more sexual pressure, due to the sexualisation of advertising and in the press and the media,’ he said.
