Manual workers in pay deadlock

Deputy Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur said that he was ‘disappointed’ after the manual workers threw out this year’s cost-of-living increase, adding that there was little room for manoeuvre.

In the absence of the Chief Minister, the Senator is acting as chairman of the States Employment Board, which will meet in the near future to assess the situation.

The board was established, following the move to ministerial government, to have responsibility for managing all public employees.

All public sector staff have been given a choice of 2.4% for one year, or a two-year deal of 2.5% for both 2006 and 2007.

The manual workers rejected the proposal in a secret ballot, organised by the Transport and General Workers Union and overseen by the Jersey Advisory and Conciliation Service.
