It is seven years since the president of Madeira and the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, signed the Friendship Agreement aimed at promoting relations between the two communities.

Latest figures show that there are 7,000 Portuguese nationals living in Jersey and several thousand second-generation Portuguese, and the majority of them have Madeiran roots.

The special relationship between the two islands is underlined by the fact that Jersey is the only place in the world where the Portuguese government funds specialist teachers.

The party coming from Madeira is led by Dr Eduardo Antonio Brazao de Castro, the regional secretary for human resources – the politician with responsibility for immigration, work, the economy and youth affairs.

He will be accompanied by his wife, Ana.

Also in the party are Gon?alo Nuno Santos, the director general in the department that controls emigration and immigration, Carlos Freitas, the adviser for the Portuguese communities in the UK, and singer Vanea Fernandes, who will perform at a cultural event for the Portuguese community on Sunday night.
