Hardware stores close down

Founder Pete Donnelly said it was sad but they just could not compete with bigger stores any more.

‘People are buying their hardware at the supermarkets and places like Woolworths,’ he said.

‘I’d like to thank all our customers over the last 34 years.

He set up the hardware business in Union Street before moving first to Bath Street and then larger premises in New Street opposite TSB when the House of Wicker range of furniture was added.

But redevelopment meant the shop moving once more to its current site opposite the Tipsy Toad pub where it has been for the past 18 years.

The business has been run by Mr Donnelly and his daughter Tina.

It will shut its doors for good within the next month after a closing down sale.
