Senator Wendy Kinnard said that there was a price to pay if the Island wanted to continue to reflect its dislike of drug offenders in its sentencing policy.
She spoke following the publication in yesterday’s JEP of figures that showed Jersey incarcerated more of its population than any other country in western Europe.
Her department is currently reviewing the Island’s criminal justice system and is due to recommend a way forward in the States before the end of the year.
The statistics published by the International Centre for Prison Studies, at King’s College London, ranked jurisdictions according to how many people were jailed per 100,000 members of its population.
Jersey was placed 55th of 213 jurisdictions around the world with 202 people jailed per 100,000.
