Hands Off: Police join the campaign

That is the message from the States police, who are backing the Hands Off campaign launched this week by the JEP and Jersey Telecom.

So far this year they have prosecuted around 300 motorists for the offence – and only this week two more drivers appeared in the Magistrate’s Court and were each fined £125.

However, the number of offences detected is believed to be the tip of the iceberg, as the sight of drivers flouting the law is common on our roads.

The Hands Off campaign, backed by JEP reader Paul Newman, whose sister was killed by a driver who is believed to have been on his mobile phone, aims to stop drivers doing it.

The campaign has the support of the Road Safety Officer, Philip Blake, who says that the offence is just as dangerous as drink-driving.

Now the States police have given it their backing too.

They are warning drivers that officers are on the lookout for drivers breaking the law, especially during the Hands Off campaign period.

Supt John Pearson says that anyone who witnesses someone breaking the law should call Rouge Bouillon headquarters on 612612.
