States ‘must give more aid overseas’

On World Poverty Day an advertisement in the Jersey Evening Post urges the States to raise the amount to Gross National Income (GNI) from its current 0.17% to the 0.7% recommended by the United Nations.

The campaigners claim that the Island’s aid budget is currently five times lower than Luxembourg and warn that the States may cut it further in 2008.

Two of the group, Michael Larbalestier and Martin Dryden, have spoken out to criticise the States for not raising the amount of aid quickly enough.
