This move is likely to take place following a recommendation from geologist and historian Dr John Renouf that the islands are worthy of this high status.
Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf, who said he has the highest respect for Dr Renouf, said he would be taking his suggestion very seriously and discussing it with the Council of Ministers, who are due to have talks with their Guernsey counterparts shortly.
A former curator of the Jersey Museum, Dr Renouf has cited among his reasons for seeking this recognition the fact that it would be impossible to find a finer set of fortifications than those built in the islands.
