Speaking at a public meeting on the new Discrimination (Jersey) Law, which will allow victims of discrimination to claim up to £10,000, Mr Keen said he was worried that companies would have to defend themselves against people making untrue claims for compensation.
‘Companies could end up putting up prices because of the cost of legally protecting themselves against vexatious claims,’ Mr Keen said.
His comments, made to civil servants Mike Entwistle and Melanie Cavey following their presentation on the new law at the St Paul’s Centre last night, were seconded by solicitor Vicky Milner.
Miss Milner said that it should be made easier, under the new discrimination system, to impose cost orders against people who are found to have lied about being discriminated against.
She also said that there had not been enough time given for employers to get ready for the law.
