The scheme allows young Islanders to step on to the health career ladder without leaving the Island, and it will save the Health department thousands of pounds worth of United Kingdom advertising and recruitment costs.

Last year Health spent £200,000 on a UK recruitment campaign.

Young people who complete the two-year course, which will be run at the General Hospital, will leave with NVQ Health and Social Care Level 2, Health and Social Care Level 3 and Health (General Healthcare Support) Level 3.

They will then have the choice of stepping into full-time employment or moving on to the pre-registration nurse training programme.
