Chief Minister Frank Walker has announced that a move to create a population register in the Island could lead to the introduction of a card which stores information about where people work and live in Jersey.

A draft law to introduce the cards could be brought to the States as early as next year and the Senator said a population register will be combined with Social Security records to create a ‘one stop shop’ record.

He said: ‘It is too early to say definitively what system will be put in place, but ID cards are not an impossibility.

Whatever method is put forward will have to be approved by the States and be data protection compliant.’
