Some operations may be delayed as a result, but senior staff say alternative dates will be rearranged shortly.

Following the unexpected death of staff nurse Elizabeth Rourke on Tuesday 17 October, both surgeons involved with the operation – Mr Day and Dr Dolores Moyano, who was employed as a locum registrar – were suspended while a police inquiry and hospital investigation take place.

The General Medical Council, the professional body which licenses doctors to practise in the UK, has confirmed that Dr Moyano gained her primary medical qualification in Barcelona in 1985.

In 2003, she was registered by the GMC as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Health and Social Services say the gynaecology and obstetrics department, including maternity services, is now being run with three gynaecology consultants, including Neil MacLachlan and Fiona Nelson and their teams, who are managing all clinics and surgery.

The third consultant is Boris Chernoch, a locum who started work at the General Hospital last week.

He has previously worked in Northern Ireland, Germany and Canada.
