Giving evidence at a Social Affairs Scrutiny Panel, Mr Bailhache – who is the titular head of the honorary police in Jersey – said that he did not see any problems with the current system.

He said that he was committed to preserving the integrity of the honorary system and would not support any change that would put that in jeopardy.

And Mr Bailhache attacked the report that recommended the abolition of the Centeniers in the courts – written by UK academic Andrew Rutherford – as ‘pompous and self-important’, adding that it failed to understand significant aspects of Jersey’s legal system.
