Health Minister backs mobile phone mast freeze

Senator Syvret told the States today that 200 masts in an Island the size of Jersey was ‘excessive and undesirable’ and said the Jersey Competition and Regulatory and Authority should force the Island’s three mobile phone providers to share masts.

He also recommended that a ‘precautionary approach’ – as adopted in the US, Australia and New Zealand – should be taken in Jersey with regard to the health risks of radiation from phone masts.

This approach would commit the States to err on the side of caution rather than calling for concrete evidence that such damage to health actually occurs.
