But although the aroma wafting from some of Jersey’s bays was long thought to be rotting seaweed – left by the sea at low tide – it is now believed that a combination of factors may give our beaches their distinct pong.
The Waterfront Enterprise Board, who have been investigating the problem for some years, have decided that they will finally get to the bottom of the matter.
They have appointed Jersey-born marine biologist Jeremy Kerley to solve the problem of Jersey’s ‘stinky bays’ once and for all.
Mr Kerley will spend the next six months, and probably longer, observing and studying the beach at West Park to decide what exactly is causing the smell.
