Around 100 guests attended Wednesday’s lunchtime seminar to hear Mr Turner’s deliberations on the UK economy, which, he predicted (correctly), was about to see a quarter-per-cent rise in the base rate.
Mr Turner specialises in the production of instant soundbites arising from many years of media interest.
But he is also interested in what his questioners think, even in the microcosmic economies of the Channel Islands, which he has visited on a number of occasions during the past few years, mainly to attend conferences.
Having started his career working for a trade union, Mr Turner worked in Whitehall for several years before joining Midland Bank in 1978.
‘I saw Mrs Thatcher coming and the public sector was no place to be in those days if you wanted to pay your mortgage!’ he joked.
