Island moves towards Kyoto sign-up

Chief Minister Frank Walker told the Corporate Services Scrutiny panel yesterday that the Island was on its way to compliance with the 1997 agreement on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.

‘We are now just waiting for the final piece of the jigsaw which is approval by the Attorney General.

We shall then comply with our Kyoto commitment,’ Senator Walker told the panel.

‘We shall shortly be implementing that.

Ministers have commissioned an energy policy and that will cover energy in all its spheres from home heating and transport to whatever.

‘There is also an initiative, which is not a money-raising initiative, on environmental taxes.

There is no significant progress on that, but it is being worked through.’
