The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) claim the proposals could affect patient care as many of the staff involved in the proposed transfers routinely service and maintain medical and surgical equipment.
It is proposed some of about 50 engineering workers be transferred from Health and Social Services to the Property Holdings department, which falls under the remit of Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur.
The director of Property Holdings, Eric Le Ruez, has written to the union to say he wants to make sure the first stage transfer of 20 manual workers from St Saviour’s Hospital creates no gaps and no reduction in service.
Mr Le Ruez’s letter says it is difficult to establish whether the work of the majority of the 20 engineers is related to building maintenance rather than the Health service.
As a result, he is seeking co-operation from the employees to complete a daily record which outlines the type of work involved and the time taken to complete each job.
