The accident happened when the small white van in which they were travelling struck a granite pillar in the church wall.

Police say no other vehicles were involved.

The man who died – who has not yet been named – was the front-seat passenger in the vehicle.

The driver, whose legs were trapped, had to be freed from the vehicle before being taken to hospital.

There was no back seat in the van and the second passenger was believed to have been sitting in the rear of the vehicle when the accident occurred.

He is believed to have suffered spinal injuries.

The alarm was raised shortly after the crash occurred by a taxi driver who was travelling in the area.
