The 21-year-old Jerseyman was arrested by officers and was in custody today.
It is understood that he is likely to be questioned by investigators at police headquarters this afternoon about the fire in the hotel’s ground floor restaurant.
Hotel staff and firefighters had to evacuate 47 guests and the Ambulance Service declared a major incident due to the potential number of casualties.
Det insp Gary Pashley said that a man was in custody assisting with inquiries into the arson attack on the Royal Hotel at about 3 am yesterday.
