Joshua Mark Dewhurst, of Grands Vaux, faces the charge in relation to a fire in the recess of a fire escape at the Royal Hotel in David Place in the early hours of Monday.

The hotel’s 47 guests had to be evacuated and at the height of the fire 18 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze and getting people out safely The States police confirmed that Dewhurst was arrested on Monday on suspicion of starting the fire in Stopford Road at about 3 am that day.

The police say a phone call from a passing member of the public and the prompt action of the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service prevented any casualties.
