Det insp Barry Faudemer, who has has just returned from three months of training in the United States, says there is always a risk that a benefactor to one of the terrorist organisations has a trust somewhere like Jersey.

‘The Americans are very concerned about large donations into places like Lebanon, to organisations like Hamas,’ he said.

‘We have done a lot of training on this, because if a bomb goes off in New York there will be a huge hunt to find out how it was funded.

Speaking to a group of trust professionals last week he said the sources were particularly difficult to track down because generally it involved low level fraud involving relatively small amounts of money.

In addition those involved tended to have strange travel patterns to places like Pakistan and Moscow.
