Sunday shopping ‘will pull in the tourists’

Presenters at Jersey Tourism’s annual presentation to the industry said the lack of shopping opportunity for weekend visitors was likely to disappoint and put people off.

David Geddes from Locumconsulting said the Island should now be focusing its offer on the short break market.

He said that although this did not necessarily mean weekend breaks, it was likely to be oriented that way and was critical to the cosmopolitan ‘city break’ market which the Island should be targeting.

A town where the shops were all closed on Sundays was ‘an obvious disadvantage’ and ‘not very desirable for visitors’, he said.

‘Shopping is one of Jersey’s unique selling propositions – tax-free, convenient and an easy environment within walking distance of the hotels.

However, there were pros and cons to Sunday shopping, he said, with complaints in the UK that the quality of life had deteriorated.
