Around 48% of Jersey networks were found to have no encryption in a detection exercise carried out by Ernst & Young.
In Guernsey the figure was 55% – 3% worse than last year.
Encryption scrambles information to prevent eavesdropping.
The team used the ‘wardriving’ technique for the survey, using a wireless-enabled laptop and tools freely available on the internet to detect and record different types of network within range.
They covered most of the main Island routes recording the name of the ‘hotspot’ and the type of encryption in use.
