Environment Minister Freddie Cohen has signed the notices of intention to designate seven ecological sites of special interest.
The list includes Ouaisné Common, Portelet Common, Noirmont Common, St Ouen’s Pond, and three coastal strips at St Ouen’s Bay between the road and seawall.
Landowners in these areas have 28 days to lodge any objections before the sites are included on the SSI list, but it is believed that landowners involved were informed of the intention in advance so that issues could be discussed.
Principal ecologist Mike Freeman said that the introduction of the new Planning Law in July had made the procedure for designation of Sites of Special Interest more straightforward.
‘Some of these areas have unique wildlife – there are insects in some of the locations not seen in other parts of Britain,’ he said.
